Yes, in many cases you can build both a Granny Flat and Studio on the same property, subject to your site's planning requirements and approval.

The key difference is how each space can be used. A Granny Flat is a self-contained secondary dwelling and can be rented to an unrelated party, while a Studio remains ancillary to the primary dwelling and cannot operate as a separate independent residence.

What is the difference between a Granny Flat and a Studio?

A Granny Flat is a self-contained secondary dwelling, designed for independent living with its own kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities. It can also be rented to an unrelated party, making it a popular option for generating additional rental income.

A Studio is ancillary to the primary dwelling and is designed as additional flexible space rather than a separate residence. Importantly, a Studio cannot include permanent cooking facilities such as an oven or cooktop, or laundry facilities.
